Oberammergau Planning Meeting

Nestled at the foothills of the Alps is one of Bavaria`s most picturesque towns,  Oberammergau, world famous for its Passion Play and its exquisite wood carving tradition  The Passion Play, the play of life and death, promised in a moment of mortal threat began the history of the Oberammergau  in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergauers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. At Pentecost 1634, they fulfilled their pledge for the first time on a stage they put up in the cemetery above the fresh graves of the plague victims. In the year 2010, the Community of Oberammergau will perform the Passion Play they’ve preserved throughout the centuries with singular continuity for the 41st time. More than 2000 Oberammergauers, actors, singers, instrumentalists and stage technicians bring to the stage those events Christianity regards as its central source of life and hope in approximately six hours of playing time.  The play runs May through October.  Our Church is planning to take a group to Oberammergau.  We’ll also include an extended stay option to see more of Europe.  The tickets for the Passion Play will probably be sold out by the end of 2008 so we’re starting to plan that part of the trip now.  If you have any interest or questions, please contact Margaret Welch at tapwelch@aol.com or 862-2428.  We’ll have a preliminary planning meeting on Monday, August 25 at 7:00 pm.  Please join us.

There will be a Basic Lay Speaking Course held on Saturdays, September 20th through October 18th from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon.  If you’re interested, please contact Peggy Powlus at 864-3603 or peggy_powlus@comcast.net or contact Pastor Dick.

FUMC Trip to see the New York City Water Falls

We are planning a two day trip to New York City in second week in September or the second week in October, whichever fits better into people's schedules.  We will be viewing the exciting Waterfall by a walking tour and a boat tour. The New York City Waterfalls by artist Olafur Eliasson is comprised of four man-made waterfalls in the New York Harbor situated along the shorelines of Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Governors Island. The Waterfalls range from 90 to 120-feet tall and will be on view through October 13, 2008. For more information on the New York City Water Falls pleases visit www.nycwaterfalls.org.

There will also be time to see at least one Broadway show and so many of the other events New York City has to offer.  The actual cost will be determines once we know the exact number of people going on this trip and if group discounts can apply.  There will be a meeting on Sunday, August 24th, right after Church in Fellowship Hall for anyone who interested in going on this trip.  If you can not attend this meeting or have questions before then, please contact Margaret Welch at 862-2428 or tapwelch@aol.com or Radetta Nemcosky at 863-2035 or
ranemcosky@juno.com.

Help Needed for Fellowship Time!!

Can you help host fellowship time in the back of the church for even one Sunday?  It takes only 20 minutes before and after church.  You’d be volunteering to make the beverages, setting up the serving materials, and cleaning up afterward.  The ushers help carry everything upstairs at the end of the service.  All materials are made available to you, so you can customize it or keep it as simple as you like.  The directions provided make it easy.  There are only a dozen people who host.  Would you consider helping so we can continue to have beverages at fellowship time?  Please contact Justin Robbins at 434-5819 or goyoureds@gmail.com
